Wimmer Scholar Thomas Syphan visits with Saint Vincent president

Br. Norman W. Hipps, O.S.B., left, president of Saint Vincent College, had an opportunity to meet with Thomas Syphan of New Florence, another of this year’s Wimmer Scholars, when he visited campus on March 31. Syphan, who is home-schooled through the Seton Home Study School of Virginia, was awarded a full-tuition scholarship. He will major in biochemistry as a pre-med student in Saint Vincent College’s Herbert W. Boyer School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computing. A frequent participant in Saint Vincent College’s Step-Up program for home school students, he is the son of Arthur and Kathleen Syphan. The Wimmer Scholarship Program, now in its 36th year, is named in honor of Archabbot Boniface Wimmer who founded Saint Vincent College in 1846 as the first Benedictine college in the United States.
