Samantha K. Sluger of Germantown, Maryland, a senior communication major and marketing minor at Saint Vincent College, is currently interning with the Washington Redskins of the National Football League in Ashburn, Virginia.
The ten-week internship under the direction of Tish Carmona, Zena Lewis, Ross Taylor and Tony Wylie, gives her an opportunity to learn about compiling daily news articles and clips, assisting with organized team activities and mini-camp, recording and transcribing interviews from players and coaches, attending press conferences, escorting media at the training facility and working with the Redskins Charitable Foundation, Redskins Salute and Women of Washington Redskins. She is also assisting in the editing of the Redskins 2017 Media Guide.
“After I complete my undergraduate education at Saint Vincent, my goal is to go into sports communication,” Sluger commented. “I want to work in a public relations department of an NFL team. I am living out my dream right now and I am cherishing every second of it. This internship is an incredible experience since I am learning so much about the industry, players and personnel as well as learning more about myself and witnessing myself grow.”
“I want to grasp a better understanding of the inner workings of an NFL organization, especially in a public relations department,” she concluded.
“I am extremely grateful for this opportunity to work with an NFL franchise,” she added. “”I’ve loved sports for the majority of my life, especially football. You can find me watching a 30 for 30 documentary on ESPN or watching The Herd with Colin Cowherd on Fox Sports 1 much of the time. I grew up a Pittsburgh Steelers fan because my dad is from western Pennsylvania but I hold the Washington Redskins near and dear to my heart not only because they are the local team for me but my dad actually almost played for them in the early 1980s. He was a scab and tried out for the team. He was close to making it but with ongoing knee injuries, it didn’t quite work out. But, 30 years later, I’m interning with them so it’s kind of like coming full circle.”
Sluger is active at Saint Vincent as a member of MADComm (vice president), Women in Business, International Students Union and the College Democrats. A member of the Dean’s List, she has served as a staff writer for The Review student newspaper.
Daughter of John and Patricia Sluger, she is a 2014 graduate of Williamsport (Maryland) High School.
