The Education Department at Saint Vincent College will host "The Ultimate Unconference: Creativity, Customization and Collaboration" (U2C3) from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, at the Fred M. Rogers Center on the campus of Saint Vincent College.
In partnership with the Westmoreland Intermediate Unit #7, the U2C3 event will create space for peer-to-peer learning, collaboration and creativity.
The agenda will include current topics such as integrated STEAM, leadership trends, personalized and customized learning, creative strategies and more.
Participants will experience a day of personalized professional development around topics they choose. Unconferences are participant-driven professional learning gatherings where the participants decide the agenda when they arrive. The purpose is to provide personalized professional development around themes in education that interest the participants.
Aaron Sams, author and instructor in the Education Department at Saint Vincent College, will lead the agenda development.
Keynote speaker Dr. Chuck Herring will speak to attendees about how he customizes learning for his students. Participants will have an opportunity to attend concurrent breakout sessions.
A nationally acclaimed educator, author, entrepreneur, actor and speaker, Herring has a myriad of experiences from which to draw lessons that can be easily chunked into “mentally” digestible pieces that audience members can immediately utilize in their teaching lives. Currently, Herring is the kindergarten – 5th grade enrichment teacher in the South Fayette School District. He is currently using the approaches of the "Habits of Mind" and personalized learning in his teaching and research. Herring has been asked to participate in panel discussions, meet and greets and many other professional opportunities to share the benefits of personalizing learning experiences resulting in high student achievement. As a gifted teacher, he also uses STEM/STEAM and creative methodologies and blends the latest approaches with solid and sound teaching practices and assessment. Additionally, he serves as a Board Member of PAEYC (The Pittsburgh Association for the Education of Young Children). In his past career, he was the world’s first, hip-hop superhero “Grammar Man.”
Pre-registration by Nov. 3 is requested. U2C3 is an approved event for Act 48 credits.
