The Saint Vincent College Education Department will be conducting a community service effort, “SVC Wraps for Kids” this December in collaboration with the Westmoreland County Children’s Bureau and Children First Fund. For this service effort, the SVC Education Department will shop for Christmas presents that will go to children in need across Westmoreland County.
Students will raise funds to cover the cost of the wrapping paper and materials, and will also add a tin of popcorn and an age-appropriate stuffed stocking for each child funded by students and faculty.
The SVC students will shop for the gifts early Saturday morning, Dec. 9, and will wrap the gifts at the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve on Sunday, Dec. 10. The wrapping of the gifts is an event filled with holiday spirit, music, food and door prizes.
SVC Wraps for Kids has served more than 700 children in the past four years with more than 100 SVC students attending each of the two days. Last year, the need jumped from 140 to 210 children served. Interested persons can participate in SVC Wraps for Kids by donating the cost of a child’s gift or stocking and/or money toward the wrapping event costs for the students by donating online at www.westmorelandchildrenfirst.org/saint-vincent-free-gift-service.html.
The project is organized by Dr. Kathleen Beining, assistant professor of early childhood education, 724-805-2981.
