Dr. Sarah Daly, assistant professor of criminology at Saint Vincent College and an expert on mass shootings and school violence, testified at a public hearing of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives Education Committee on School Safety in the Main Capitol Building in Harrisburg on March 15.
Opening remarks were made by Dave Hickernell and Jim Roebuck, chairs.
Daly was part of a series of speakers offering recommendations to improve school safety. Others offering recommendations were A. Stevens Krug of Krug Architects; Mark Zilinskas, mathematics teacher at Indiana Area Senior High School; and Dr. David Helsel, superintendent of Blue Mountain School District.
Other presenters talked about the current landscape of school safety, view of Pennsylvania education organizations and national approaches to school safety.
Daly is the author of the forthcoming book, Everyday School Violence, which discusses best practices for understanding and preventing school violence. She is also conducting research on school employees’ attitudes toward school violence.
Daly earned a bachelor of arts degree in Spanish from the University of Notre Dame, a master of science in education in applied psychology and school counseling from the University of Pennsylvania, and master of arts and a Ph.D. in criminal justice from Rutgers University’s Camden and Newark campuses, respectively. During her Ph.D. studies, she served as a counselor in a Camden County, New Jersey high school.
Daly now teaches both in the undergraduate curriculum at Saint Vincent and in its master of science in criminology program. She has also worked as a consultant to train teachers in conflict resolution and de-escalation strategies.
Her past and current research examines motivational factors among mass shooters and best practices in school violence prevention.
