Ragan Winners

This year’s winners of the annual Ragan Poetry Contest at Saint Vincent College were announced on March 19 at Paula Bohince’s reading for the Visiting Writers Series.  First place winner is Paisley Adams, a junior art education major from Ligonier, for “Our Seasons;” second place is John Wojtechko, a senior English and communication double-major from Crescent, for “The Last of the Mohicans;” and third place is Anthony Horner, a senior English major from Ligonier, for “Elegy to My Father’s Youth.”

The winners each read their poems at the reading, prior to Bohince’s presentation of her work.

Paula Bohince is the author of three poetry collections, most recently Swallows and Waves (Sarabande, 2016). Her poems have appeared in The New Yorker, The New Republic, Poetry, Granta, and elsewhere. Honors for her work include the Amy Lowell Poetry Traveling Scholarship, an NEA Fellowship in Poetry and the “Discovery”/The Nation Award. She lives in Pennsylvania.

Designed to recognize and encourage student writing of poetry, the Ragan Poetry Prize competition is made possible by a gift from Dr. James Ragan, a 1966 graduate of Saint Vincent College, former director of the University of Southern California’s Graduate Professional Writing Program. Dr. Ragan’s poetry has been awarded the Emerson Poetry Prize, the Gertrude Claytor Memorial Award from the Poetry Society of America, and has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, two Pushcart Prizes, the Walt Whitman Center Book Award and the PEN Center West Poetry Prize. A Fulbright Senior Lecturer to China and Yugoslavia, he has read his work extensively in Asia and Central and Eastern Europe, including the Moscow International Poetry Forums of 1985 and 1990. His own work includes In the Talking Hours, Womb-Weary, Lusions and The Hunger Wall. In addition, he was a working screenwriter and dramatist with numerous stage and screen credits.
