Thomas Holowaty of Ligonier, associate professor of accounting in the Saint Vincent College Alex G. McKenna School of Business, Economics and Government, was honored with the presentation of the Boniface Wimmer Faculty Award at the Saint Vincent College spring Honors Convocation on April 25 in Saint Vincent Basilica.

Named for the founder of Saint Vincent and the pioneer of Benedictine monasticism in the United States, the Boniface Wimmer Award recognizes a senior faculty member for sustained excellence.

Holowaty was off campus at a conference supporting the Saint Vincent Hockey Club and wasn’t able to attend the presentation.

Holowaty earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Business Administration from Duquesne University.

He joined the faculty of Saint Vincent College in 1972 and is currently the longest-serving full-time faculty member. Holowaty has been a leader of the faculty, serving as Faculty Council president and a long-time member of the Budget Committee. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) who has been active in public practice for many years. He is a member of the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA).

“As an expert in accounting, particularly taxes, Holowaty’s knowledge and skills have supported a number of Saint Vincent and community endeavors, most notably, Saint Vincent Summer Theatre which has relied on his expertise for many of its 50 year history,” commented Dr. John Smetanka, vice president for academic affairs and academic dean. “Outside of his accounting activities, Holowaty was also the driving force in restarting the Saint Vincent College Hockey team as a club sport in 1999. He has served as the team’s general manager for the past 19 years.”

“As a successful professional himself in the classroom, Holowaty stresses the skills essential for the discipline,” Smetanka continued. “Students appreciate his sharing of his experiences which he uses to teach and mold the next generation of business leaders. He has rigorous standards but helps students meet them. A student from introductory accounting shared that he truly knows the world of accounting inside and out. Another student wrote that Dr. Holowaty is able to transform a boring topic for some students into something interesting. Finally, a student in his upper-level course on taxes said that Professor Holowaty is a beast at teaching tax law! The way he gets us to learn the material is remarkable.”

“Beyond his professional roles, Holowaty is a devoted son, husband, father and grandfather,” Smetanka concluded. “He is a role model who provides loving care to each generation of his family.”
