Dr. Michael J. Urick, graduate director of the master of science in management: Operational Excellence (MSMOE) program and associate professor of management and operational excellence at Saint Vincent College, was appointed president for a one-year term by the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) Pittsburgh Affiliate effective June 1.
In this role, Urick will oversee educational, programmatic and recruiting initiatives of the professional organization.
Urick has held several other volunteer roles over the past 10 years with ISM Pittsburgh including director of certification, director of scholarships, director of dinner meetings and vice president. He is also a regular presenter at ISM events at both the local and international levels.
Urick was previously named “2015 Person of the Year” by the international ISM parent organization in recognition of his outstanding achievement in academia as well as his role as ISM-Pittsburgh vice president. That same year, the ISM-Pittsburgh affiliate was also presented with an Affiliate of Excellence award at the same ceremony.
Since joining the Saint Vincent faculty in 2012, Urick has focused on teaching courses related to organizational behavior, human resources, operations, supply chain, research methods and organizational culture among other topics. Though a majority of his research publications focus on intergenerational issues, he also researches in areas related to leadership, conflict and identity in the workplace as well as writes about methods of leveraging popular culture in the classroom. Urick blogs on Saint Vincent’s website and is also the director of the MSMOE graduate program which focuses on problem-solving, continuous improvement and waste reduction. The program was ranked as one of the best non-MBA business graduate programs in 2018 by U.S. News and World Report as well as ranked in Value College’s two most recent rankings as a “Best Value” Masters in Management Program.
ISM is an international professional organization that has impacted supply management and the purchasing profession through best in class education, certification, leadership development and research for over a century. Since 2008, ISM has trained more than 60,000 professionals in more than 30 countries. Thousands have received ISM's coveted Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM) and Certified Professional in Supplier Diversity (CPSD) designations.
ISM research impacts the global economy. The ISM Manufacturing Report On Business is one of the most reliable economic indicators available. Published monthly since 1931 and cited heavily, the report includes the Purchasing Managers Index (PMI), developed in 1982 with the U.S. Department of Commerce, which measures new orders, production, employment and supplier deliveries. The ISM Non-Manufacturing Report On Business debuted in 1998.
The ISM Pittsburgh Affiliate celebrated its 100th year in 2015.
