Saint Vincent Gallery Announces Winners in Juried Arts Competition

Daniel Bonnell’s oil painting titled “Adoration” won first prize in the Seventh Body and Blood of Christ by Belita WilliamJuried Catholic Arts Competition, which is being exhibited in a multimedia show of religious-themed art at The Saint Vincent Gallery on the campus of Saint Vincent College.

 

With the first-place finish, Bonnell, a native of Savannah, Georgia, won The Brother Nathan Cochran Award in Sacred Arts along with a cash prize of $1,000.

Second prize of $750 was awarded to Belita William, for her oil on panel, “Body and Blood Saint Maximilian Kolbe by Lisa Buggeyof Christ.” Third prize of $500 went to Lisa Buggey of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, for her acrylic painting titled “Saint Maximilian Kolbe.”

Four honorable mention prizes of $250 each were awarded to Margaret Farr, of Manassas, Virginia, for her mixed media, “Regina Caeli Laetare,” Manuel Farrugia, of Victoria, Gozo, Malta, for his oil on canvas, “Fiat Mihi Secundum Verbum Tuum,” William Ferry of Oak Harbor, Washington, for his digital photograph, “Ecce Homo,” and Jordan Hainsey, C’11 of Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, for his digital photograph, “The Coptic Martyrs of Libya.”

A total of 44 works by artists from 17 states and three countries are incluRegina Caeli Laetare by Margaret Farrded in the unique show in which artists worked in mixed media, stainless steel, oil, acrylic, photography, watercolor, cast stone, plaster, fabric and others.

The exhibition will be available for viewing in the gallery on the third floor of the Robert S. Carey Student Center through Sunday, Dec. 2.  Gallery hours are 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, and Thursday until 7 p.m. The gallery is closed on Mondays, as well as Nov. 21-26 for Thanksgiving break. Admission is free and open to the public.

The juror for the exhibition was Dr. Elizabeth Lev, an American-born art historian who specializes in Christian art and architecture, Baroque painting Fiat Mihi Secundum Verbum Tuumand sculpture and High Renaissance art. She is a professor of art and architecture for the Italian campuses of Christendom College and Duquesne University, and a licensed guide for the city of Rome and the Vatican Museums. 

This is the seventh juried Catholic arts exhibition, which seeks to foster the arts of the Western Christian tradition, although other artistic traditions of Christian subject matter are also considered. The exhibition is sponsored by the Diocese of Greensburg - The Most Rev. Edward C. Hitchcock, The House of Hansen, Sondra L. Jonson, Fr. Robert Keffer, O.S.B., Maria Lang, Cecilia Lawrence, Janet McKenzie, Patricia C. Meccia, David and Suzann Miriello, Taressa Norberg, Fernando Cidoncha Pérez, Blair Piras, James Patrick Reid, Ellen T. Ryan, Maysoun Y. Following Lev’s lecture on Oct. 28, a grand total of $3,250 in prizes was distributed to the winners. A people’s choice prize of $250, based on voting by visitors, will be awarded at the completion of the exhibition.
