Observances Planned at Saint Vincent to Honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

LATROBE, PA – Saint Vincent College has planned three days of observances to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 19, Monday, Jan. 21 and Tuesday, Jan. 22, the events include a day of service, memorial Mass celebration, dream center and dinner celebration featuring a guest speaker.

MLK-Celebration

The celebration is under the direction of Ishmael Solomon, assistant director of residence and multicultural student life at Saint Vincent.

The three-day commemoration will kick off with Jan. 19’s service day. Sponsored in partnership with the Saint Vincent office of service learning, students, faculty, staff and others will have the opportunity to be involved in various community service projects across the Latrobe area. On Jan. 21, a Martin Luther King Jr. Day Mass of Celebration will be held in the Mary, Mother of Wisdom Chapel in the Robert S. Carey Student Center beginning at 12:05 p.m. Following the Mass, a dream center will be created in the Carey Center lounge, along with the opportunity to participate in arts and crafts and other activities.

On Jan. 22, the Martin Luther King Jr. Dinner Celebration will take place in the Fred M. Rogers Center, beginning at 4:30 p.m. Dr. Ivan Lamourt, assistant headmaster for student life at Saint Benedict Prep in Newark, New Jersey, will serve as the guest speaker.

All events are free and open to the public, but due to space limitations, reservations in advance are required for the dinner, and can be made by contacting Solomon at ishmael.solomon@stvincent.edu or in person during the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. in the Campus Life office in the Robert S. Carey Student Center. Tickets will be available to pick up beginning Wednesday, Jan. 16 at the Campus Life window in the Carey Center.
