Student-Produced Videos Garner National Accolades

LATROBE, PA – Two videos produced by students from the Saint Vincent College department of communication received national recognition after being honored by the Videographer Awards

The video “Being Our B.E.S.T.” won an Award of Excellence for student production and the short video, “The Department of Communication at SVC,” won an Award of Distinction in video for the web.

Members of the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals (AMCP) judged entries using scores out of 100. Entries receiving scores of 90-100 are Excellence Winners, while scores of 80-89 are Distinction Winners and 70-79 Honorable Mention Winners.  

Being Our B.E.S.T.” was produced by Ian Herzing, a 2019 graduate from St. Marys, as176 Being our BEST title part of an independent study. The video details Saint Vincent College’s Bearcat B.E.S.T. (Building Excellence through Skills Training) program, a community outreach program that provides educational opportunities for 18-21-year-old students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The video contains interviews with the program’s educators and staff, along with students and the Bearcat B.E.S.T. participants themselves.

“The Department of Communication at SVC” was produced by 2019 graduate Michael DeSantis of Upper St. Clair and edited by Kathleen O'Reilly, a 2019 graduate from Johnstown. The video176 Dept of Communication title contains interviews with professors and students involved in the department of communication at Saint Vincent College and details the courses of study and opportunities for students. The video was produced as part of the class CA 435: The Digital Media Professional.

“The Department of Communication at Saint Vincent has, since its founding, been known for nurturing strong videographers,” commented David Safin, assistant professor of communication. “This recognition is validation that this group of students is no exception. By being honored with awards for projects so diverse speaks to their ability to use the medium of video in order to craft distinct messages for specific audience. I cannot wait to see what they all do next.”
