LATROBE, PA – On Thursday, Aug. 29, the Westmoreland Diversity Coalition will host the presentation “Not Hate – Not Here,” featuring noted speaker and author Arno Michaelis. The Saint Vincent College Criminology Department
is helping to sponsor the event.
Michaelis was a leader of a worldwide racist skinhead organization throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, a reverend of a self-declared racial holy war and lead singer of the hate metal band Centurion. Single parenthood, his love for his daughter and the forgiveness shown by those he once hated helped turn Michaelis’ life around, bringing him to embrace diversity and practice gratitude for all life. He is now a speaker, author and educator working with a global network of peacemakers and mentors.
Michaelis authored the book “My Life After Hate” and was co-author of “The Gift of Our Wounds.” He is heavily involved with Serve 2 Unite, an organization aimed at establishing a healthy sense of identity, purpose and belonging that diverts young people from violent extremist ideologies, gun violence, school shootings, bullying, substance abuse and self-harm.
The event will take place in the Fred M. Rogers Center, beginning at 8 a.m. with registration, breakfast and a meet-and-greet. A welcome and introduction will begin at 9 a.m., followed by Michaelis’ keynote speech, a question-and-answer session and closing remarks.
Tickets are $15 and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information and to register, call 724-834-1260 (ext. 1109) or visit www.wdcoalition.org.
This marks the second event the SVC Criminology Department has helped sponsor on the topic of hate crimes, following the March symposium “The Face of Hate: Investigation and Prosecution of Hate Crimes.”
“Not Hate – Not Here” is presented by The Westmoreland Diversity Coalition, with partnerships with Saint Vincent College, Adelphoi, The Community Foundation of Westmoreland County and the YWCA. In addition to the SVC Criminology Department, sponsors include Excela Health and First Energy.
