Umbrella Project 1

LATROBE, PA – On Tuesday, Sept. 10, more than 100 Saint Vincent College students took to the turf at UPMC Field to participate in UP: The Umbrella Project, presented by the acclaimed New York dance group Pilobolus and staged on behalf of the Arnold & Winnie Palmer Foundation.

Umbrella Project 2In commemoration of the 90th birthday of the late Arnold Palmer, legendary golfer, lifelong Latrobe resident and longtime friend of Saint Vincent College, the SVC students performed a choreographed display of lit umbrellas, working together to visually manifest the beauty of cooperation and honor Palmer and his support of individuals working together to achieve great results.

With umbrellas that lit up in various colors, the student participants took orders from the Pilobolus emcee and arranged themselves in various formations, including the letters AP, Palmer’s signature multi-colored umbrella logo and a green and gold “SVC.” These formations were captured from the top of an 80-foot lift and displayed on a large screen for participants and spectators to view.

Umbrella Project 3The display and performance at Saint Vincent was part of a cross-country celebration of Palmer’s life. It started with ceremonial tee shots at 7 a.m. at his two home courses, Latrobe Country Club and the Bay Hill Club in Florida, to commemorate the time of his birth. The colors of the umbrella logo – red, white, yellow and green – were displayed on a 400-foot Ferris wheel at ICON Park in Orlando, while the Empire State Building in New York City was also lit in these signature colors.

UP: The Umbrella Project was first performed in 2012 in Camden, Maine, with subsequent performances taking place in Cambridge, Massachusetts (2013), Baltimore (2016), Singapore (2016) and Brooklyn, New York (2017). The event was co-created by Pilobolus and the Distributed Robotics Laboratory at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
