LATROBE, PA – For the seventh consecutive year, the Saint Vincent College education department will team up with the Westmoreland County Children’s Bureau (WCCB) and the Westmoreland County Children First Fund (CFF) for SVC Wraps for Kids, a community service effort aimed at providing Christmas gifts to local children in need.
After being provided with a list of children to shop for by the WCCB, the Saint Vincent education students will shop for each child at Wal-Mart in Latrobe on Saturday, Dec. 7. On Sunday, the students will then gather at the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve on the Saint Vincent campus to wrap the gifts they chose from a child’s wish list in a holiday-spirited event, complete with music, food and door prizes.
The Saint Vincent College students raise funds to cover the cost of the wrapping paper and materials to ensure all available funds go toward gifts. They also add a tin of popcorn and a stuffed stocking for each child, also funded by the students and faculty.
Over the first six years of SVC Wraps for Kids, gifts were provided for more than 1,250 underprivileged children. In 2013, 87 children were served, but the number has steadily grown, with nearly 300 children served during the 2018 event. An average of more than 100 Saint Vincent students have participated in the two-day event in each of the past five years.
Funds for the purchasing of gifts are provided by the CFF through donations from the public, which can be made online at https://www.westmorelandchildrenfirst.org/saint-vincent-free-gift-service.html.
Donations will also be accepted via mail, sent to the Saint Vincent College Early Childhood Education Club, Attn: Dr. Kathleen Beining, 300 Fraser Purchase Road, Latrobe, Pennsylvania, 15650.
Online and mailed donations will be accepted through Friday, Nov. 29.
