LATROBE, PA – The Saint Vincent College English Department and Visiting Writers Series will host Joe O’Connor, C'65 for the launch of the inaugural publication of Eulalia Books’ Joe O’Connor Poetry Series, entitled Why Poetry? The event will occur at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, in the Fred Rogers Center on the campus of Saint Vincent College. Admission is free and open to the public.
Why Poetry? compiles the poems of Joe O’Connor, an alumnus of Saint Vincent who graduated in 1965. Not long after his graduation, O’Connor was drafted to fight in the Vietnam War, and after that, a life in the workforce continued to pull his attention away from his poetry. Now retired, O’Connor has vigorously returned to his writings, working with the editor of Eulalia Books and Saint Vincent English professor Michelle Gil-Montero to publish his first chapbook.
The Joe O’Connor Poetry Series will publish a new chapbook every spring and seeks to shine a light on the writing of members of the community whose poetry reflects serious commitment and merits broader recognition. Eulalia Books accepts the submissions of poetry chapbook manuscripts (20-35 pages) from any former student of Saint Vincent College or Westmoreland County resident whose poetry has not yet appeared in book form. The handmade books are produced by current Saint Vincent College students, as part of the Small Press Publishing course taught by Gil-Montero.
