LATROBE, PA — The Saint Vincent College Concert Series will present “Melodies of the Sheng and Guanzi,” a program of traditional music from China. The concert will be held at 7 p.m. March 15 at the Performing Arts Center, located inside the Robert S. Carey Student Center on campus. Admission is free.
Hu Jianbing and Bao Jian will perform classical, folk, and original music on authentic Chinese woodwind instruments, the sheng and the guanzi.
Bao Jian is a master of the guanzi, a double-reed folk instrument, and has performed worldwide as a soloist and chamber musician. He won the 1998 Pro Musicis International Award in New York and first prize in the 1995 International Chinese Ethnic Instrumental Competition in Beijing. Bao is the artistic director of the Chinese Performing Arts of North America and the artistic director of East Wind Percussion Music Academy.
Hu Jianbing, visiting professor at the China Conservatory of Music, has earned global recognition for his skills as a sheng soloist and composer. A founder and president of the Chinese Performing Arts Association of North America, Hu was part of the Central Chinese National Orchestra before moving to New York. Hu debuted as a soloist at age 10, and in 1998 he won the Pro Musicis International Award at auditions in Carnegie Hall in New York. He has performed in the United States, France, Switzerland, Japan and Korea.
