Saint Vincent College to host da Vinci 5 surgical robot demonstrations

by Public Relations | January 20, 2025

LATROBE, PA – The da Vinci 5 robot, a robotic surgical system that operates with greater precision than human hands, will be demonstrated twice this week at the Sis and Herman Dupré Science Pavilion at Saint Vincent College.

The da Vinci 5 is the most advanced and integrated robotic surgery device from Intuitive, a global leader in minimally invasive care. The da Vinci surgical system provides surgeons with high-definition 3D vision and robotic arms to perform complex surgeries with greater precision.

“We are very excited to have this robot on campus to teach the College’s students and our Future Masters of Medicine students about this cutting-edge technology,” said Dr. Stephen Jodis, dean of the Herbert W. Boyer School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computing.

The device will be demonstrated as part of a free, open-to-the-public lecture by thoracic surgeon Dr. Michael Szwerc at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 21. The second demonstration will be at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 22 as part of an event for the Future Masters of Medicine, a program for high school juniors and seniors sponsored by Saint Vincent and Independence Health System. Both demonstrations will be conducted in the Dupré Pavilion atrium.
