LATROBE, PA – Saint Vincent College will host a lunar eclipse viewing event from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. March 14 in the observatory at the Sis and Herman Dupré Science Pavilion.
Members of the Department of Physics will be on hand with telescopes for up-close viewing of the eclipse. The event is free and open to the public.
As the Earth's shadow engulfs the moon, sunlight passing through the edges of atmosphere will make the moon appear red and orange. The “blood moon” will be one of the darkest lunar eclipses visible from North America for the next several decades.
Unlike a solar eclipse, special glasses and other eye protection are not necessary to safely view a lunar eclipse.
For more information, media may contact Dr. Daniel Vanden Berk, associate professor of physics, at daniel.vandenberk@stvincent.edu. Vanden Berk recently was featured on KDKA-TV discussing the upcoming lunar eclipse.
