‘The Magic of Peking Opera’ at Saint Vincent College

LATROBE, PA – Members of the Minnesota Chinese Opera Troupe will present “The Magic of Peking Opera” at 7 p.m. April 4 at the in the Performing Arts Center in the Robert S. Carey Center at Saint Vincent College. The performance is free and open to the public.

The presentation will mark the conclusion of “One Hundred Years of Faith, Education and Service: Commemorating Fu Jen University’s Benedictine Foundation (1925-1933)” academic conference April 4 at the Fred M. Rogers Center. Academic conference registration is not required to attend “The Magic of Peking Opera.”

The troupe will perform popular medleys such as “Sanniang’s Teaching,” “Farewell, My Concubine,” “Empty City,” “Lady Xunguan” and “Butterfly Love.”

Professional coloratura soprano Qian Xu will perform in this celebration. Qian earned a master’s degree in music at the University of Saskatchewan and has performed throughout the United States, Canada and China. She teaches music through the Xu Qian Music Center to students of all ages.

Peking Opera, also known as Beijing Opera, dates from the late 18th century. It combines recitation, song, music, mime, martial arts, dance and acrobatics.
