by Public Relations | April 28, 2025

“Music for the Spirit” will honor the late Archabbot Douglas R. Nowicki, O.S.B.

LATROBE, PA – The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Manfred Honeck, will present “Music for the Spirit,” a special performance that will include a selection honoring the late Archabbot Douglas, R. Nowicki, O.S.B., P’63, C’68, S’72, D’95, at 7 pm on April 30 in the Saint Vincent Archabbey Basilica.

“The Archabbot cherished his friendship with Maestro Honeck, as well as Saint Vincent’s strong relationship with the Symphony,” noted Father Paul Taylor, O.S.B., C’87, S’91, president of Saint Vincent College. “This will be a most meaningful evening in that they shared a common bond in exploring ways to bring the superb talent of the Symphony to the Basilica for the enjoyment and spiritual benefit of the Saint Vincent and local communities. Both knew that music has the power to communicate and amplify messages and emotions beyond that of words alone, especially when presented in the unique environment of the Basilica.”

The Symphony will perform “Elysium” by Samy Moussa and “Litanei auf das Fest Aller Seelen, D.343” by Franz Schubert, which was arranged by Maestro Honeck. It will also present James MacMillan’s “Larghetto for Orchestra” in honor of Archabbot Douglas, and Franz Schmidt’s “Notre Dame: Intermezzo.” The Saint Vincent Schola will join the Symphony in performing two traditional chants.

The event will conclude with Grammy Award-winning organist and Washington, PA, native Paul Jacobs, who will perform Felix Alexandre Guilmant’s “Symphony No. 1, Organ and Orchestra, Opus 42.”

A pre-performance reception will be held at 5:30 pm in Amil and MaryAnn DiPadova Hall on the Saint Vincent campus.

Individual general admission concert tickets are available for $30. Admission to the reception and reserved concert seating can be purchased for $150. Tickets can be obtained at https://www.eventsquid.com/event.cfm?id=27186 or by calling 724-805-2177.
