Community Outreach and Service Learning

At Saint Vincent, we encourage you to use your skills and talents to help others in our Latrobe community and beyond. Community service is where it all begins. Latrobe, a small town of 8,000, is known for being the original neighborhood of Mister Rogers and Arnold Palmer. We take pride in and take care of our parks, neighborhoods, and small businesses, and most importantly, we take care of each other. Saint Vincent students are warmly welcomed into our community and are invited to help our friends in need.

The Benefits of Service

Our students get connected to our Latrobe Community with a service project during orientation week where they spend an afternoon working in the community at various businesses helping to weed, paint, stock, and clean. Many classes at SVC including the Freshmen Listening Seminar offer the opportunity for students to commit to a community service of their choice.

We believe this is not only a benefit to our community, but also to our students in the following ways:

  1. Enhanced Learning: Applying classroom knowledge to real-world situations deepens understanding and retention.
  2. Skill Development: Students gain practical skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership.
  3. Community Engagement: Building connections with the community fosters a sense of social responsibility and civic engagement.
  4. Breaks Down Stereotypes: Service learning allows students to interact with diverse groups, challenging preconceived notions and fostering empathy.

Our Community Partnerships

We collaborate with local charities and organizations to support existing community programs. In some initiatives, students engage directly with community members through activities such as tutoring, reading to the elderly, or coaching youth sports. In other initiatives, students contribute behind the scenes by organizing fundraising events, working at resale shops, or collecting donations. Here are some of the organizations we currently partner with.
