LATROBE, PA—The Saint Vincent College Concert Series will present a pair of concerts inspired by the connections between the visual and musical arts this October. Organist J. Christopher Pardini will present Classicism, Impressionism, and Cubism: The Visual Arts and its Impact on Music on Sunday, October 8, 2023 in the Saint Vincent Basilica, before soprano Dr. Caryn Greco will present Lyrical Impressionism: French Art Songs on Sunday, October 22, 2022 in the Verostko Center for the Arts on Saint Vincent’s campus.
Both concerts are inspired by the new Verostko Center exhibit Impressionist Legacies: The Michael and Aimee Rusinko Kakos Collection and feature musical works that were inspired by and contributed to major artistic movements.
About J. Christopher Pardini’s Oct. 5 Performance in the Saint Vincent Basilica
For centuries, the visual arts have impacted musical movements. The neat, orderly lines of Classicism are reflected in the clean, clear, crystalline structures and harmonies of classical music. Cubism, with its intentional use of cubes, spheres, cones, and cylinders, is mirrored through the use of weighty, chunky blocks of sound. Impressionism, stressing hazy, blurred lines, is represented using obscured, misted harmonies. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear three rarely heard organ masterworks representing the concepts of Classicism, Cubism, and Impressionism: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s epic Fantasy in F Minor, American composer Dan Locklair’s innovative Rubrics, and Maurice Duruflé’s larger-than-life Suite, Op. 5. These three monuments of organ repertoire, performed on the equally monumental John-Paul Buzard organ in the Saint Vincent Basilica, will be an evening of bravura music in a resplendent space.
About Dr. Caryn Greco’s Oct. 22 Performance in the Verostko Center for the Arts
Surrounded by the paintings of Impressionist Legacies: The Michael and Aimee Rusinko Kakos Collection, Dr. Caryn Greco will perform a program of art songs by the French impressionist composers Claude Debussy, Gabriel Fauré, Reynaldo Hahn, Maurice Ravel, and others. Join us for this rare opportunity to simultaneously experience visual and musical impressionism in the Verostko Center for the Arts in the Dale P. Latimer Library at Saint Vincent College.
