Social Media: Student Athletes

The Saint Vincent College Athletic Department understands the popularity and usefulness of social media networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook, You Tube, Instagram, and others that are accessible through the informational technology made available on campus.

Student-athletes, like all members of the Saint Vincent Community, are governed in their use of the informational technology on campus by the Acceptable Use Policy of the institution.

But, in addition, student-athletes are representatives of the College and are expected to portray themselves, their team, and the College in a positive, responsible manner at all times. Any online postings by student-athletes must therefore be consistent with federal and state laws, team, Athletic Department, College, NCAA rules, regulations and policies, including the Guidelines listed.

 
Athletic Social Media Guidelines

When you participate on a social networking site or use social media, you must never post, republish, or allow others to post on your page, any comments or photos that are:

• offensive, inappropriate, derogatory or defamatory.
• of such a nature as to that create a serious danger to the safety of another person or that constitute a credible threat of physical or emotional injury to another person.
• depictions of assault, physical/psychological abuse, hazing, harassment, or discrimination.
  depictions of acts involving the sale, possession, or use of controlled substances, or any other illegal or prohibited conduct; or,
• depictions of team-related or College-identifiable activities (including wearing/using team uniforms or gear) portrayed in an offensive or inappropriate manner.

Student-athletes must be fully aware that anything posted online is available to anyone in the world, including future employers, graduate programs and scholarship committees. Any text or photo placed online becomes the property of the site(s) and is completely out of your control the moment it is placed there - even if you limit access to your site.

In addition to discipline that may be imposed for violation of College policies through the Office of Student Affairs, student-athletes are subject to suspension or dismissal from their team for violations of these policies.
