LATROBE, PA.— This March, Latrobe Art Center will present “Caught in a Glimpse: Portraiture of Human Expression,” an exhibition featuring the work of Saint Vincent College senior and student artist Sydney Hoffman. The exhibit runs from Thursday, March 5, through Thursday, April 2, in Latrobe Art Center’s Annex Gallery.

“We are excited to be showcasing Sydney’s work at our art center,” says Lauren Buches, executive director of Latrobe Art Center. “She is a prolific and talented artist with the ability to capture human expression.”

A native of St. Marys and art education major, Hoffman’s work focuses on the human figure and regional architecture as expressions of a hidden humanity. Her subjects are frequently inspired by other artists, travel and previous educators. Her family and close community encouraged her to pursue a career in the field of art. Presently, she is student teaching in the Greater Latrobe School District and hopes to inspire students to use their creativity regardless of the career they enter.

Hoffman is excited for this opportunity to share her strong focus on human portraiture with the community. “I have always had a deep interest in human anatomy and art,” she said. “I am interested in how the nuances of facial expressions and body language often reveals the depth of a person. Visitors will be able to experience my black and white portraits in a variety of media.”

Buches says that this exhibition marks the first time a student artist from Saint Vincent College will be featured in a solo exhibition at Latrobe Art Center. “We’ve been working with Sydney and her instructor, Andrew Julo, on all moving parts of this exhibition.”

“I believe this exhibition is a terrific learning experience,” added Buches. “Sydney is involved with all moving parts of this exhibition—from marketing to how to set up a gallery show to even the details of a reception. That’s valuable experience. But I also believe that her exhibition will introduce the community to just how comprehensive and excellent the art education program is at Saint Vincent College.”

An opening reception will be held on Thursday, March 12, from 6-8 p.m. Appetizers and refreshments will be available at the opening reception, which is free to the public.

The Latrobe Art Center is located at 819 Ligonier Street. Regular gallery hours are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Saturdays.  For more information, visit www.latrobeartcenter.org.
