LATROBE, PA – Dr. Mary Regina Boland, an assistant professor of data science in the Herbert W. Boyer School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computing at Saint Vincent College, was quoted in a June 11 article by the Catholic News Agency about how tech-savvy Catholics can relate to Blessed Carlo Acutis. The article also appeared on the EWTN website.PHOTO: Dr. Mary Regina Boland

Acutis has been described as the Catholic Church’s first technophile saint. A computer whiz kid, Acutis created a website for his parish, Santa Maria Segreta in Milan, Italy, and another website that chronicles Eucharistic miracles around the world. Only 15 years old when he died from leukemia in 2006, Acutis was beatified by Pope Francis in October 2020.

Boland said Acutis’ computer skills make him relatable to many of the students she teaches at Saint Vincent.

“My hope is that with his canonization he will become more widely known and his story of witnessing to the faith, guiding others to conversion, and his interests in technology will be spread more broadly,” Boland told CNA. “I think his witness can help draw more young people into the faith and also empower those who are Catholic to develop methods to make their faith more accessible in a world that is driven by technology and data.”
