LATROBE, PA – Saint Vincent College welcomed 50 participants from the Baltimore-based Next One Up life program to campus July 14-18 for the program’s annual summer camp. It was the largest group of attendees in the three years that Saint Vincent has hosted Next One Up.

“It is a pleasure working with the professional team and these young men from Baltimore as they work to ready themselves for a college experience as student-athletes,” said Heather Albright, dean of admission at Saint Vincent College. “The program at Next One Up mirrors many aspects of the mission of Saint Vincent College, so this is such a natural and fulfilling partnership.”

The camp is designed to mimic a typical campus experience for a student-athlete and provide exposure to college-readiness ideas. The campers attended a work skills session with Kim Woodley, director of the Saint Vincent College Career and Professional Development Center AND learned about leadership from Dr. Michael Urick, C’04, dean of the Alex G. McKenna School of Business, Economics, and Government. They also participated in a panel discussion with Saint Vincent coaches Mick Janosko (baseball); Kate McCauley, C’15, (volleyball); Chase Johnson (football); and D.P. Harris, C’13 (basketball).

Founded in 2009, Next One Up provides innovative services that go beyond the boundaries of typical programs to foster stability and create lasting change among young men ages 11-25 who face challenges of under-resourced homes, neighborhoods or schools. Based in Baltimore, it offers year-round, multi-year services with a curriculum focused on empathy, leadership, conflict resolution and value-based decision making.

Through mentoring, tutoring and field trips, Next One Up helps young men excel in their academic journeys—learning goes beyond the classroom and into the community. Students gain real-life experience, become critical thinkers and develop social consciousness through experiential and service-learning. It boasts a 100 percent high school graduation rate, and all its students participate in organized sports.
