LATROBE, PA – As part of a recently established partnership between the two colleges, 31 students and faculty members from San Beda University in the Philippines visited Saint Vincent College in early September.

The group that visited Latrobe from Sept. 1 to Sept. 6 included some senior faculty and several students majoring in political science. They got a tour of the Saint Vincent College campus and Basilica—including a show in the Angelo Taiani Planetarium and a walk through the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve—and took a side trip to Fallingwater. There also was an information session for Saint Vincent students and faculty who might be interested in visiting San Beda.

“Benedictine monasteries throughout the world are connected strongly in a special way reflective of the community that St. Benedict envisioned 1,500 years ago,” said Fr. Paul Taylor, O.S.B., C’87, S’91, president of Saint Vincent College. “Our students can go to any of these monasteries and schools and feel at home, knowing that they have a sense of belonging there, because we are connected.”

San Beda is a Catholic university that offers undergraduate and graduate programs to 8,500 students in San Miguel, Manila, Philippines. Founded in 1901, San Beda is the only Benedictine university in the Asia-Pacific region.

Fr. Paul visited San Beda in summer 2023, laying the groundwork for a partnership between the schools. Later in the year, Rev. Fr. Aloysius Ma. A. Maranan, O.S.B., rector-president of San Beda, came to Saint Vincent.

“We were happy to welcome our friends from San Beda to gain a sense of Saint Vincent’s faculty, students, campus and community,” Fr. Paul said. “We hope that the connections made during this visit will facilitate broader collaboration across our two universities.”
