McCarl Coverlet Gallery set to open ‘Flights of Fancy’ exhibit

by Public Relations | September 05, 2024

LATROBE, PA – The Foster and Muriel McCarl Coverlet Gallery at Saint Vincent College will open its fall exhibit of antique coverlets, “Flights of Fancy: A Menagerie of Handwoven Birds,” with a reception from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 12. The reception is free and open to the public

Birds have always inspired the human imagination, so it is no wonder that artists long have chosen birds as the subject of their creative expressions. From pheasants and turkeys to homely passenger pigeons and exotic birds-of-paradise, these jacquard woven textiles feature a diverse range of our feathered friends. “Flights of Fancy” celebrates bird artists of yesteryear with 28 antique coverlets and the field guide prints that may have inspired their designs.

“Flights of Fancy” will be on display through Dec. 20.

The McCarl Coverlet Gallery is on the ground floor of the Fred M. Rogers Center. Admission and parking are free. The McCarl Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and by appointment. Guided tours are available.
